Find Recovery and Stability with Substance Use & Dual-Diagnosis Counseling
Substance use rarely happens in isolation. A drink to unwind after a stressful day, or a prescription taken longer than intended, can slowly become something that feels out of control. Often, anxiety, depression, trauma, or another mental health condition sits underneath, and substances become a way to cope.
In South Metro Atlanta, alcohol misuse, prescription medication dependency, and dual-diagnosis conditions make up a significant share of acute mental health needs. A dual diagnosis, also called co-occurring disorders, means a person is living with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition. Treating only one rarely works. Lasting recovery comes from addressing both at the same time.
What are the risks of untreated substance use?
Untreated substance use can damage physical health, relationships, finances, and careers. Alcohol and prescription medications such as opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants carry real risks of dependency, dangerous interactions, and overdose. Stopping suddenly can also be unsafe, which is why
medical guidance matters.
When a mental health condition goes untreated alongside substance use, the cycle tends to repeat. Symptoms drive use, and use worsens symptoms. Warning signs include needing more to get the same effect, failed attempts to cut back, hiding use from loved ones, and trouble meeting responsibilities at work or home.
A professional counselor can help!
In consultation with your counselor, you will receive a full assessment of your substance use, mental health, and overall needs. This helps determine the right level of care for you. Many clients do well in outpatient counseling. Others benefit from more structured support, such as an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or partial hospitalization program (PHP), and we help coordinate those referrals when
needed.
Treatment is individualized and may include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, relapse-prevention planning, and family involvement. For opioid use disorder, Suboxone treatment combined with counseling can ease withdrawal and cravings. Our team also provides medication management for co-occurring anxiety, depression, and mood disorders.
